Beyonders by Brandon Mull
The Beyonders trilogy by Brandon Mull is a thrilling, imaginative adventure that follows Jason, an ordinary kid swept into the magical world of Lyrian—via a hippo. Tasked with a near-impossible quest to destroy the evil wizard Maldor, Jason teams up with Rachel, a homeschooler also drawn into Lyrian, and a cast of unique companions. Together, they face thrilling challenges, from toxic swamps and giant crabs to betrayals and battles of wits. Though Jason lacks special powers; his cleverness, integrity, (and love for baseball) are all he needs to be a hero. This action-packed trilogy is original, family-friendly, and celebrates courage, friendship, and a fight for a worthy cause.

The Little Women Collection by Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott's The Little Women Collection is a masterpiece that celebrates family, individuality, and resilience.
This classic collection features Little Women and its sequels (Good Wives, Little Men, and Jo's Boys), detailing the lives and adventures of the March family. Starting with the joys and challenges faced by four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—during the American Civil War, the series captures their development, struggles, and successes as they experience love, loss, career goals, and family life.
From Jo's fervent independence and literary dreams to Meg's transition into domestic life, Amy's artistic ambitions, and Beth's gentle, selfless nature, the collection provides a heartfelt depiction of personal growth. The later books, Little Men and Jo's Boys, focus on the next generation and Jo's role as a mentor to her students.
Through vividly drawn characters, Alcott explores themes of love, ambition, and societal expectations with warmth, humor, and relatability.

Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Thus far, the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder is my second favorite series I've ever read, but don't let "second" fool you. That's a huge compliment, and I adore each character! It is a justly beloved collection of semi-autobiographical novels chronicling the pioneer life of the Ingalls family as they journey across the American frontier. Starting with Little House in the Big Woods (1932) and concluding with These Happy Golden Years (1943), the books capture the resilience, challenges, and joys of 19th-century settler life. Each book highlights the themes of family, perseverance, and the pioneering spirit, with vivid depictions of hardship and triumph. Together, they offer an enduring portrait of the American frontier, blending historical detail with Laura’s warm, engaging storytelling.
I categorized this series in 4th-7th grade because I think these aged children could easily enjoy reading the series on their own. However, book one will feel a little young for them. The characters grow and develop throughout the series, and the struggles become more prominent as the books continue. As a family read-aloud series, this is excellent for all ages.
Final Thoughts: Our home set features beautiful illustrations but lacks Farmer Boy and Our First Four Years, which are included in the linked set. I didn't want to exclude them, though I still advise reading them last, despite their chronological placement in the set. Farmer Boy explores Almanzo Wilder's childhood, Laura's future husband, but I find it more enjoyable to read after experiencing Laura's life and watching their relationship develop. Additionally, Little House in the Big Woods transitions seamlessly into Little House on the Prairie (another reason I recommend reading Farmer Boy last).

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven novels that transport readers to the magical land of Narnia. Filled with adventure, moral lessons, and Christian allegory, the series spans from the creation of Narnia to its ultimate end with the majestic lion Aslan at the centerfold. While, I'm sure you're familiar with the Pevensie siblings– Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, the entire series is full of unique protagonists from Digory and Polly in The Magician's Nephew to Eustace and Jill in The Silver Chair. Each character has their own unique and personal challenges, personalities, and strengths.
My very favorite book of all is The Horse and His Boy, and I've heard this is a rare opinion! (Maybe I just love horses.) This standalone story follows Shasta, a young boy who escapes from the oppressive land of Calormen with a talking Narnian horse named Bree. They uncover a plot to invade Narnia and journey to warn the kingdom, learning about bravery and identity along the way. My point is that each book is a great story all on its own or within the greater context of the entire series.
The Chronicles of Narnia weaves together rich storytelling, vivid characters, and profound themes of loyalty, temptation, redemption, and the battle between good and evil.

Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
I have to admit, I have not yet read Anne of Green Gables. It met the list through various research and referrals. As a matter of fact, it is on my own Christmas list!
Here's what I know: Anne of Green Gables follows the lively orphan Anne Shirley who arrives at Green Gables, a quaint farm near the town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. 11-year-old Anne discovers that the Cuthberts—kindly Matthew and his no-nonsense sister Marilla—intended to adopt a boy, not a spirited red-haired girl. Yet, before they can send her back, Anne captures their hearts. Anne of Green Gables is a timeless tale with themes surrounding childhood dreams, resilience, the power of love, family, community, and a bygone era. I hear the following seven novels in the series are equally enjoyable. I can't wait to read them all and report back with a proper review.

The Imagination Station
The Imagination Station books are not just "Christian versions" of The Magic Treehouse, as often described. I genuinely believe they are superior children's literature and even better written. These books offer delightful time-travel adventures that engage young readers while imparting lessons on history, faith, and character.
Each tale follows cousins Beth and Patrick as they enter the Imagination Station, a device that takes them to significant historical events, from Viking expeditions to the American Revolution. During their journeys, they meet historical figures, solve mysteries, and learn values such as courage, kindness, and perseverance.
With its fast-paced narratives, relatable characters, and a mix of education and entertainment, this series is ideal for children eager to explore history in an enjoyable, engaging manner. Parents will value the wholesome themes, while kids will be thrilled by the exciting adventures.

Rainbow Magic by Daisy Meadows
When a friend recommended Rainbow Magic, I admit I was skeptical. However, I'm glad I decided to give them a chance. After a quick read-through, I added this exact box set as a Christmas gift for my own young reader. They're excellent for beginners and a wonderful way to get little girls excited about reading. While you might choose something more everyone-friendly for family read-aloud sessions, they are safe for solo reading time and absolutely charming.
The Rainbow Magic series follows best friends Kirsty and Rachel, who can secretly see fairies and help them on magical adventures. Each story centers on the girls teaming up to help a new fairy to overcome trouble from the mischievous Jack Frost and his clumsy goblins. With clever thinking and a touch of magic, each book in this series follows a simple formula that makes a child smile every time.
